The Importance of a GOOD Editor

AuthorConfession #35
Image result for online freinds
I make friends on Twitter or other places with other authors who self-publish. There is a risk involved with this. Not like a stalkery kind of risk that they take over your identity or rob your house, but all self-published authors have to make a decision about editing, to do it themselves, or to get someone else to do it. As a writer, I want to support them, but when their published book downright NEEDS a real editor and is very hard to read from the first paragraph, I cannot honestly support their work.

Beta readers who are HONEST and authors who can take CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM are essential to this process. Nothing kills your fans like a product that doesn't live up to all your hype. "Buy my book! Here's a sneak peek!" and the sneak peek sucks because the author didn't get anyone good to read it; that's a real bummer.

It's like a bad blind date.

If the character is human, then not human, then magical, then can see behind their head, then I'm inside their head, but their thoughts would be better explained by an omniscient narrator, but the author prefers paragraphs of italics filled with questions that are telling and not showing the reader...INHALE, then I'm not going to read past the first page. I'm certainly not going to buy it.

I'm gonna leave before the main course by sneaking out the bathroom window.

Not that my own works are all quality. All of my free stuff hasn't been edited by a GOOD editor. As I learn, I go back and edit myself. I'm much better now than 10 years ago. I republished and updated two old works this summer. I am not immune to mistakes.

Unedited authors learn slower. Join Critique Circle and help authors learn. If you are writing and need beta readers, join Critique Circle.

Pay for an editor if you can. Don't let your friends edit your works who don't read a lot, or don't write as much as you do. They will think you are a god or goddess of the typewriter and will only tell you you are awesome and never tell you that you suck.

David Lodge says he doesn't listen to academic criticism, "designed to exert the critic’s mastery over the text." Yeah, you don't HAVE to listen to all critics, but you DO have to listen to some of them. You are not superior to all others, but you do have the right to not listen to them and to not change parts of your story that you feel work, or bring your books to the 21st century, or whatever you tell yourself. Don't let them kill your voice. But do let them help you grow.

Lastly, I made up that Author Confessions number. Perhaps I should edit it and make it number 1 and do a series...  I realize that the hashtag author confession is a real thing with a calendar of topics for the month. Yeah, I'm not part of that. This is just me and my thoughts.

How I Make Book Covers

This week we found out we were rejected by Asimov's.

My aunt said she'd buy a copy of our story if we published it. She's very sweet. My co-author said he wasn't opposed to the idea of making it into an ebook and using that later as a freebie when we market our longer works.

I began to work on some book covers. I came up with 2 of them and needed some opinions. You can help until August 14th if you have a Wordpress account.

Making book covers is easy with Canva. Sign up. Check it out. It's free. You choose a template that works for you, then you can edit the text and font, as well as change the background images. Download the images to your computer in whatever form you choose. I download them all, just because of the different file formats required for different self-publishing sites.

You may use images released for commercial use. Pixabay has a decent selection. Download the images and use them for whatever you wish. I use them for book covers and for making memes for Spoonfuls of Sugar.

I know that's a big link dump, but that's how I'm feeling, full of helpful information. I hope I can help you, too.

SALE!

Go to my Amazon page this weekend, you will find my ebooks FREE.

THEN go here, you will find my newest ebook for 99 cents.

A short macabre tale of revenge and Voodoo. Herbert Tulliver will go to great lengths to settle the score with his old Math teacher.

There is a twist ending! I never write short stories without a twist. :)

Amazon has not yet synced my penname with my real name. I emailed about this, but I kinda regret it now. I have some thing I've grown un-proud of over there. Maybe I don't want them linked. I'll think about it.

Self Publishing is an impulsive thing at times. You think, "Yes! This book is awesome!", then later you read over it and realize, you've grown and can do so much better.

Amazon doesn't allow you to delete a book. Once it's there, it's there forever. You CAN unpublish it. Or, I have one book in 'Draft' that will never get published because I uploaded a better one.

We wishy-washy authors who never live up to our own standards are a self-depreciating bunch! That's why we have to be impulsive and publish things, or we'd never get them out there.

Go Read and Review my Free Ebook "Alex in Hunterland"

Alex in Hunterland is a parody of Alice in Wonderland, but with a redneck spin. See if you can find all the 'redneck' stereotypes in this work.

Alex, scared of his drunken Step-Father, seeks solace in the gun cabinet. Climbing in, he discovers a world with an elusive snowshoe hare whose pelt would make his Step-Father proud of him and maybe stop hitting him. Chasing the rabbit, he encounters an array of characters and nonsensical outcomes.

Please also give me some stars and a review! This is a quick read, at just under 2,000 words.

Kindle version FREE for a limited time!

Beginning June 22, 2015, there will be a 5-day FREE download of Abandoned in Cocal.

This is for Kindle only.

The paperback version has a different cover, due to the channels used to produce it. Hey, I'm new to this! I'll get it right next time.

Please read it and leave me a review on Amazon. Ideally, since the paperback version has a different page, it would be awesome for you to post your review on that page as well. Copy/paste and submit. Pretty Please?

I know that is asking a lot, but I guess I'm greedy.

Exciting News!

Today I have self-published my first book.

This was a long time in coming. I had attempted this book in 2008-2009 when I wrote it as a Nanowrimo novel and used the winning promotions to self-publish. However, I was in too much of a hurry and submitted a draft rather than a polished copy. Ashamed, I let it stagnate.

I tried to do a full re-write but lost that document in a computer crash. I was devastated.

Until I found the original.

This month, I woke it back up. I did some research and made it better. It has a new title, new cover (or two), and a little bit of new content. The bones were good. It didn't need all the change I thought it did. I'm happy with it. It makes a good first novel. It may not be huge, but it is not terrible.

It is now LIVE on Amazon, Kindle Direct, CreateSpace, and Goodreads (link coming). There will be a promo or a giveaway.

Also, I have a shiny new facebook author page. https://www.facebook.com/elshahawk . Please go and like it.

I've also tried my hand at NO Content books. I made a couple of cute homework planners.

In the works is a new short story for free on smashwords, and the beginnings of a new manuscript. :)

Stay tuned for more!

A to Z - "N" is for Novel Publicity (more on marketing)

Continuing on the marketing theme, Novel Publicity is a great place to go to get your book some attention. They host Blog Tours for authors to showcase their books and get reviews.
A blog tour is an intensive online publicity period. During this period, a group of our host bloggers will feature you and your book in some capacity—this might be a book review, an author interview, or another promotional opportunity depending on the blog’s specialty. At Novel Publicity, we recognize the importance of reviews, which is why all our tours are review-only tours. We also encourage our bloggers to cross-post their reviews to Amazon and GoodReads, providing them with reminders before, during, and after the tour, along with a special random blogger prize to further incentivize cross-posting to Amazon.
This costs $1,000, but this service works.
If that is too steep for you, you can opt for a book discussion guide for $350, or a custom book-marketing campaign for $75 an hour. They also help with author bios and custom websites.

Emlyn and her husband are sweet people and know what they are doing. I was following her before her website became so huge. She has published her own children's books as well as others. If she can do it, you can do it. She can help you.

Or you can try to go it alone. Do you already have a long list of blogging friends who will help promote your book? Do you already have an email list to share your book with? Do you tweet it and share it on facebook and google plus? Have you run a 5 day free promotion with Kindle Select? Do you have your own domain?

These are a few questions to ask yourself. If you have more tips, advice, or questions, please leave a comment.

A to Z - "M" is for Marketing (my 16 steps of e-book publication)

I've been studying marketing your e-book.

It seems the progression of steps is:
1. write
2. edit/rewrite
3. design a cover/pay for a cover design/post the cover on your blogs and emails
4. blog about it/ build an email list/use a video trailer
5. edit/rewrite
6. blog about it
7. have beta readers give feedback
8. rewrite it
9. pay an editor to edit it
10. re-write based on their suggestions
11. select a date to publish/format to publish/cost of book
12. promote it/ give incentives for buyers/give incentives for reviewers
13. check it over one last time/upload content for publication
14. Fulfill your promises to incentivized buyers/reviewers
15. promote it
16. begin a new project

Here is another 10 steps to Kindle marketing.

Marketing takes up the second half of the work. You can be the best marketer and never sell a bunch of copies if your writing is not good. The first half of the steps are just as important. Besides, if you start marketing your book before it is finished, it gives you incentive and a deadline to finish it!

Also important is beginning a new project. Don't try to be a one-hit-wonder or ride out this book forever. People want to read many books by one person. People want to collect books by one author. Do a series and get them all out fast before anyone forgets your name. Soon you'll be big.
